At Summit Orthopaedics we take pride in offering our patients a complete diagnostic plan for your body in order to regain the strength, mobility and confidence.
Not all procedures in orthopedic medicine require invasive measures in order for you to reclaim the lifestyle that you want to achieve. Because of the extensive training that our staff has, the doctors here at summit orthopeadics are prepared to treat your case with the care and respect that you deserve. There are several ways to approach your individual needs and concerns and here at Summit we have the answers.
Every area of the body has specialized components and as such, the approach we take at Summit is one of careful consideration and assessment. As is our general approach, the Summit Orthopaedics method of treatment follows a pattern that introduces our patients to the least invasive method of treatment with subsequent treatments that may require more intensive work, including surgery only if needed. The methods used to treat each of our patients are vastly different and will require a personalized approach according to a patient’s needs.
Spine careYour spine is at the center of all your body's movements. Even the slightest disruption or damage to one component of your back's structure can upset the intricate balance that your spine provides. Minor damage can make even some of the slightest movements very painful.
At Summit Orthopaedics, we provide complete diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation strategies, as well as the latest techniques in preventive intervention. Dr. Philip McCowin is highly trained and specialized in the treatment of the back, neck and spine.

Our highly trained staff will provide you with all the resources needed to enhance your rehabilitation and recovery. Psychological well-being is a critical part of the entire recovery process, and is an integral part of our treatment regimen.
Specialized hand programOur hands are vital to the thousands of functions performed every day. The hand is made up of 27 bones and an intricate network of muscles and tendons that allow movement and awareness of the most delicate sensations.
- Carpal tunnel syndrome - Frequent numbness, tingling, or pain in the hand
- Thumb Arthritis - Continual use and stress on the hand makes this a common site for arthritis in the hand
- Ganglion Cyst - a non-cancerous, fluid filled mass, commonly occurring on the back of the wrist
- Trigger Finger - an irritation within the finger that causes the tendon to "catch" and then suddenly release
- Trauma - fracture and/or severe injury of the hand
Summit Orthopaedics provides comprehensive care for the upper extremity and hand. Specialized diagnosis and treatment of the hand can be best served by the experience and care provided by our specialists at Summit Orthopeadics.
The Latest Technology and Techniques used at summit are:
Fluoroscopy and Electromyography: These techniques are used by our physicians to observe bone movement and measure electrical transmissions between muscles and nerves.
Arthroscopy and endoscopy: These are some minimal surgery techniques that are emphasized in our surgical procedures.
Fiber optic lenses and microscopic cameras: These technologies allow our surgeons to perform delicate procedures through tiny incisions that cause minimal disruption to the healthy tissue in the rest of the area below the surface.
Total hip programAt Summit Orthopaedics, we understand that approximately 43 million Americans suffer from arthritis. Severe arthritis can limit mobility and seriously impact a person’s ability to function in a manner conductive to a productive lifestyle. Medications are used mostly in reducing pain and inflammation. There are many patients that require further measures such as joint replacement to regain their quality of life.
The Specialists at Summit Orthopaedics are board certified orthopaedic surgeons and each is committed to providing you with the most current methods of treatment available. It is reassuring to our patients at Summit when we explore all conservative treatment options before surgery is considered.

When a joint has worn to the point where it no longer functions or carries the range of motion that is necessary for day to day living, an artificial joint (called prosthesis) can take its place. The surgery to implant the prosthesis is termed a total joint replacement, which recreates the normal function of the joint.
Signs of an arthritic hip:
- The cartilage lining is thinner than normal or completely absent. The degree of cartilage damage and inflammation varies with the type and stage of arthritis.
- The capsule of the arthritic hip is swollen
- The joint space is narrowed and irregular in outline
- Bone spurs or excessive bone can also build up around the edges of the joint
Is Joint Replacement Safe?
Annually, approximately 150,000 people have hips replaced. Our specialists perform this safe and common procedure and will take the time to review risks with you as well as explain how our post operative program can reduce risk and aid in rapid recovery.
